Kneehigh & Noye’s Fludde

Orchestival presents a Kneehigh / Charles Hazlewood Production of Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde (Noah's Flood) with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Directed by Simon Harvey
Conducted by Charles Hazlewood
Designer, Rosanna Vize

Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood) is drawn from an early fifteenth century mystery play, an element of a collection  known as the Chester Mystery Cycle. These mystery plays (each telling a Biblical tale) were originally performed by different sections of the community in various parts of the town. In the spirit of this ancient British tradition, our huge community production of Britten’s setting of Noye’s Fludde (which includes several hundred Somerset children) will create a stunning event.

Britten’s Noye’s Fludde is one of the most brilliant community operas ever written. Harnessing simple core melodies and anthemic hymns, the story is beautifully, plainly told. The enormous children’s cast are the engine of the piece; they design their own costumes (every animal under the sun), play instruments and sing! The effect of several armies of children slowly converging on Noye’s hastily-built ark will be utterly hypnotic.

Part-pageant, part-carnival, ORCHESTIVAL’s Noye’s Fludde will be led by a production team in association with Kneehigh Theatre.  The performance will be the culmination of a six month project which will see members of the team in schools workshops across the County.
